Motor Start-Up (MA)

Requirements and Use Cases

The operation of asynchronous machines in industrial, power plant or distribution networks requires their design for parallel and sequential starting. The sizing must be carried out with regard to the network load, the motors themselves and the protection behavior. Among other things, the following must be analyzed:

  • Assessment of the ability of one or more motors to start up against given load torque characteristics and determination of start-up times
  • Calculation of the voltage drop and the network load for single and parallel motor start-ups
  • Determination of sequential start-up times of several asynchronous machines
  • Determination of the steady-state operating points

Based on the quasi-dynamic load flow calculation, PSS®SINCAL offers with the motor start-up module (MA) an effective tool for the evaluation of simultaneous or any sequential motor start-ups and the associated network loads. The motor characteristics are basically compared with the load characteristics, considering the electrical properties.

  • Simultaneous or successive sequences of start-ups of any number of asynchronous machines
  • Use of customizable characteristic curves for torque and start-up current
  • Use of standard characteristics according to NEMA
  • Constant and switchable star/delta connection of the stator windings for motor start-up

PSS®SINCAL Extended Modules for Analysis

Extend the core calculation modules into deeper analysis with these modules related to the model enhancement and future grid development paths, from Optimal Power Flow, to Time-Series Calculation, Network Development, and more.

PSS®SINCAL supports your entire engineering workflow

For over 20 years, PSS®SINCAL has enabled engineers to tackle different challenges of the changing distribution, transmission, and industrial power systems, including maintaining high reliability of supply and efficiently integrating Distributed Energy Resources. With the modular platform of PSS®SINCAL, power system planning and operation engineers are supported with their entire workflow from the initial data import and network modeling (considering past, current and future conditions), to basic and extended calculations, all the way to extensive protection simulations and analysis as well as other methods in time and frequency domains.
